Heavy-duty escalators

The escalators in this project are heavy-duty units designed for intensive use in public transport.

Complete electrical and field modernisation

This was not just a PLC replacement. The escalator control cabinets were completely renewed, and the field switches, sensors and associated electrical components were replaced as well. The control cabinets and automation were delivered on a turnkey basis.

Sysmac and distributed I/O

The control system is based on Sysmac automation and distributed I/O; field equipment is connected to the control system via distributed I/O.

Integrated safety architecture

Safety functions are handled by a separate safety architecture with an NX-SL3300 safety controller and Safety over EtherCAT communication. The safety devices in the field are integrated into this system.

Safety and operational monitoring

  • Speed and direction monitoring
  • Main and auxiliary brake monitoring
  • Handrail monitoring
  • Missing / damaged step detection
  • Chain break detection
  • Safety switches for steps, skirt, pit and covers
  • Emergency stop circuits, safety switches and sensors
  • Contactor feedback monitoring (EDM)
  • Back-up control in case of inverter failure

Back-up control and SCADA

The control cabinet includes a star-delta starter that allows the motor to run even if the frequency inverter fails.

The system is connected to the existing SCADA infrastructure via Modbus RTU communication.

The project was delivered in cooperation with our partner engineering team.
